Testing Back-up Cameras and Parking Sensors | IIHS

 
Recently, the National Highway Safety Transportation Association (NHSTA) announced two options, once thought of as luxury items, will be added to its list of “Recommended Features”. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) wanted to find out if Back-up Cameras and Parking Sensors really worked.

 
How did they get an honest reaction to the dangers of backing up? The volunteers were told a little white lie. 111 drivers were asked to climb into a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox LTZ to evaluate the Infotainment system, navigation capabilities and ease of use of things like the radio. When asked to back out of the parking spot -surprise! A child-sized crash-dummy popped up directly behind the vehicle.

 
Using the back-up camera alone had the greatest benefit with only 56% of drivers hitting the dummy. 6% of drivers avoided the dummy when using parking sensors alone. When no technology was used; every driver hit the dummy. Looks like everyone can use an extra pair of eyes.
