3 Steps to a Happy Computer | Tech Tips
3 Steps to a healthy and happy computer in today’s Tech Tips…
1. BACKUP – always backup first! Purchase an external hard drive (1Tb is < $100) and COPY all your important folders to it. IMO Don’t bother with backup software as tough to restore. Tips – don’t forget to export shortcuts from your Internet browser and copy down all license codes when you purchase software.
2. ANTIVIRUS – check that your Antivirus software is active and running. Yes, pay the $50/year for the latest protection. IMO DO NOT run “free” antivirus software provided from Rogers or other utilities – not adequate purchase Norton, McAfee or another reputable provider. Tip – usually one antivirus license covers up to 3 computers!
3. UPDATE, CLEAN and OPTIMIZE
Go to your computer’s Control Panel:
a) Run “windows update” and allow it to install all available important and optional updates. Yes, do this even if you have it set to auto, it doesn’t.
b) Run “free up disk space” or “clean” on your C Drive. Check appropriate boxes to remove all unnecessary temporary files and junk
c) Run “optimize” or “defrag” on your C Drive to defragment. Yes, even do this if you have it set to auto, it doesn’t.
Enjoy your healthier, secure and often faster computer that may last years longer! Disclaimer – these are simply best practices: not all encompassing, no guarantees and always BACKUP your important data first!
